If you are looking for a perfect escape from the hustle of downtown Tampa without leaving the metro area, Flatwoods Conservation Park is the crown jewel of the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. Known for its pristine pine flatwoods and cypress domes, this park offers a paved, car-free experience that is unmatched in the region.

Whether you are a cyclist chasing a personal best on the 7-mile loop, a family looking for a safe stroller-friendly walk, or a nature photographer hunting for wildlife shots, "Flatwoods" delivers. In this guide, we break down exactly how to get there, where to park, and what makes this conservation area a must-visit destination for makers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Getting There: Two Entrances

One of the most confusing aspects for first-time visitors is that Flatwoods Park has two distinct entrances located miles apart. Choosing the right one depends on where you are coming from and what kind of experience you want.

1. The Morris Bridge Entrance (Main)

14302 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa, FL 33592

This is often considered the "scenic" or main entrance. It is generally quieter and offers a more direct immersion into the woods.

  • Closer to the 7-mile loop connection.
  • Ideal if coming from I-75 via Fletcher Ave.

2. The Bruce B. Downs Entrance

18205 Bruce B. Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL 33647

Located in the heart of New Tampa (near the Chili's), this entrance is busier and features a long 2-mile paved extension just to reach the main loop.

  • Great for adding extra mileage (4 miles round-trip).
  • Convenient for New Tampa & Wesley Chapel residents.
Pro Tip: Bring Cash or Card

There is a $2.00 daily parking fee per vehicle. The pay stations generally accept credit cards, but technology can be fickle in the woods. Carrying two singles is a smart backup plan. An annual pass is also available for frequent visitors.

Is Flatwoods Local to You?

Flatwoods Park serves a massive area. If you live in any of the following cities or towns, you are within a ~30-mile radius (roughly a 30-45 minute drive), making this an accessible day trip.

  • Tampa / New Tampa
  • Temple Terrace
  • Wesley Chapel
  • Lutz
  • Zephyrhills
  • Land O' Lakes
  • Brandon
  • Valrico

The Loop & Amenities

The main attraction is the 7-mile paved loop. It is wide, smooth, and closed to motorized traffic, making it incredibly safe for road biking, rollerblading, and running.

Key Features

  • Hydration Stations: Unique to this park, there are several water cooler stations (often with ice-cold water) located along the loop.
  • Restrooms: Facilities are available at both parking lots and at designated spots on the trail.
  • Picnic Areas: Shelters and grills are available, perfect for a post-ride lunch.
  • Off-Road Trails: For mountain bikers, single-track trails branch off into the woods. These require a bit more skill and proper tires.
