The Ultimate Bambu Lab Buying Guide: A1, P1S, or X1 Carbon?

If you have been researching 3D printers recently, you have undoubtedly heard one name repeated over and over: Bambu Lab.

In just a few years, they have completely disrupted the market. Gone are the days of constant tinkering, leveling bed springs, and flashing firmware just to get a decent print. Bambu Lab promised printers that "just work"—and for the most part, they have delivered.

But their lineup has grown fast. You now have the budget-friendly A-Series, the workhorse P-Series, and the flagship X1-Series. Which one do you actually need? Let's break it down.

The Contenders at a Glance

The Entry Level (A-Series)
A1 Mini & A1

"Bed Slingers" perfect for beginners. Open frame design.

  • Best Price
  • Multicolor (AMS Lite)
  • Not for ABS/ASA
The Sweet Spot (P-Series)
P1P & P1S

CoreXY speed and reliability. The P1S comes fully enclosed.

  • High Speed CoreXY
  • Enclosed (P1S)
  • Basic Screen/Camera
The Flagship (X1-Series)
X1 Carbon

AI features, Lidar, and premium materials.

  • AI Failure Detection
  • Hardened Steel Parts
  • Expensive

1. The A-Series (A1 Mini & A1)

These are "Bed Slingers," meaning the print bed moves back and forth (Y-axis). This is the traditional style of 3D printer (like the Ender 3 or Prusa MK4).

Who is it for?

Beginners, kids, and people who strictly print PLA, PETG, or TPU.

  • A1 Mini: Tiny footprint (180mm³ build volume). Incredible value. It’s cute, quiet, and reliable.
  • A1 (Standard): Full size (256mm³ build volume). It includes a nicer touchscreen and a stiffer frame.
Note on Materials: Since these printers are "Open Frame" (no box around them), you cannot easily print warp-prone materials like ABS or ASA. If you need heat resistance, skip to the P-Series.

2. The P-Series (P1P & P1S)

This is where Bambu Lab shines. These use CoreXY kinematics, meaning the bed only moves up and down. The print head flies around at incredibly high speeds with no loss in quality.

The Difference: P1P vs. P1S

The P1P is the open-frame version. The P1S is the exact same machine but it comes with panels, a glass door, a stronger cooling fan, and an activated carbon filter.

Our Advice: Just get the P1S. For the small price difference, having a fully enclosed printer allows you to print ABS, ASA, and Nylon, and it significantly reduces fan noise.

3. The X1 Series (X1 Carbon)

The machine that started it all. It looks very similar to the P1S, but it has a few "Luxury" upgrades:

  • Lidar Sensor: Scans the first layer to automatically set flow rate and check for defects.
  • AI Camera: Detects "spaghetti" failures and stops the print automatically.
  • Better Screen: A large, responsive iPad-like touchscreen (The P1S has a retro text-only screen).
  • Hardened Steel: Comes ready to print abrasive Carbon Fiber materials out of the box.

Comparison Chart

Feature A1 Series P1S (Our Pick) X1 Carbon
Price Range $ - $$ $$$ $$$$$
Motion System Bed Slinger CoreXY CoreXY
Enclosure No Yes Yes (Aluminum)
Multicolor AMS Lite (4 Colors) AMS (Up to 16 Colors) AMS (Up to 16 Colors)
Screen Touchscreen Basic D-Pad Large Touchscreen
AI / Lidar No No Yes

The Verdict: And the Winner Is...

The Bambu Lab P1S

The Best All-Rounder for 95% of Users.

While the X1 Carbon is technically the "better" machine, it is hard to justify the extra ~$500 for a nicer screen and Lidar that you rarely notice.

The P1S prints just as fast and just as beautifully as the flagship model. It handles advanced materials like ABS/ASA thanks to the enclosure, and it works seamlessly with the standard AMS system. If you want a printer that is a reliable tool rather than a hobby project, the P1S is the undisputed king of value.

Honorable Mention: If you are on a tight budget and only plan to print PLA (toys, decorative items), the A1 Mini is unbeatable for the price.
